Default GNER trains terminating at Peterborough - why?

I was a bit surprised to hear on the news that GNER trains from
Scotland are terminating at Peterborough - this seems somewhat
excessive. Is it because this is a crew change point and if they
brought the trains nearer to London there would be no handy relief
crew to take the train back or what?

Kings Cross Ticket Hall and waiting area were being used by Emergency
Services as a make shift 'hospital' to treat casualties, so only
Platforms 9,10 and 11 could be opened.

GNER trains were terminated at Peterborough as there no were else that
could handle all the GNER trains turning around. WAGN were operating a
service from Peterborough for onward connections.

Were being used. Although the reports at yesterday afternoon's press
conference that everyone had been removed from the Piccadilly train are
now in some doubt.

Of course, the reporters last night continually referred to "Platforms
8, 9 & 10" being open...

They were - whilst I was there at about 5:45pm, Platform 8 was being
used for a service to Peterborough!

I can confirm that Platform 11 was open too - that's where my train
left from.

Tony

Peterborough is the closest GNER station to London. Although services stop
at Stevenage this does not have any facilities to reverse south to north.

There are a few places where reversal could be done, but using them would
probably impede the flow of other trains - best service all round probably
is by reversing at Peterborough.
There were a few GNER through trains during the day on Friday additional to
the Peterborough reversers which provided a fast service to Peterborough.
