Why are most of the DLR Stations so close?

A lot of it is to do with the way that the Docklands area has been
redeveloped. A lot of the stations which are close to one another by
rail nevertheless involve crossing one of the docks or another barrier
ino rder to travel between them by train, meaning that walking routes
between the two points would be very much longer and thus all the
stations are needed. Getting off the train at Canary Wharf wouldn't
be much good for somebody visiting the Museum in Docklands, for
example, even though the station and museum are only a few hundred
yards apart as the crow flies.
Another factor is that since some extensions to the original DLR have
been built, consideration has been given to ease of interchange
between branches as well. This can make a difference since the
computer signalling allows very accurate timings, almost to the
second. Have a look at Poplar if you want to see the advantages of
this in action.
