Temple is nearer, is it not?


It is, but not a very useful place to start a journey to (say) Kings
Cross.


The Alwych branch could be extended to become a very useful line. A
short extension to southwards to Temple and Waterloo, plus an
extension northwards to Kings Cross and a depot would fill a missing
link in the Underground system (Kings Cross/Saint Pancrass to
Waterloo).

Some of the distances between the stations on the DLR are absurdly short.
I suppose it made sense when it was going across docks that were a long way
to walk around back in 1987 but these days when half of them have been filled
in and there are footbridges over the rest it makes no sense whatsoever.

I'm an unfit lump and even I could get from Temple to the LU offices
on High Holborn in 12 minutes. *This is a longer distance than the
tube line would cover. The point with the Aldwych shuttle is that it
was slow (for obvious reasons) and therefore relatively infrequent. If
you missed one at Aldwych you could easily walk to Holborn in the time
it would take to wait for the next one. There are also zillions of
buses up Kingsway to Holborn 24 hours a day.

It is also worth pointing out that the station would need much more
work than just replacing the lifts to get it back to a standard for
staff to work in it and for passengers to use. *It's a nice enough
dream to have but there are far better uses for the money given the
massively competing transport demands in London.

I got stuck in the lift at Aldwych for about an hour the last time I
used the line just before it closed. The poor reliability of the lifts
and the expense of replacing them was a major factor in the line's
closure. CJB.

Epping - Ongar Railway Now Open
 
Looking over the road bridge at Epping to see the old Epping - Ongar
tracks below I wonder if they are still energised? Also there seems to
be quite a complex layout - all rusty but all rails still in situ. On
the right there is an elevated line that curves into the trees. Was
this a head-shunt. And on the left another line at a lower elevation
also seems to curve left into the trees. Was this the line to Ongar?
In all there is plenty of room for a new station to link with Epping

IIRC the line to ongar was on the right and the line going down on the
left was a siding. Why they've just blocked off all that track is anyones
guess. You'd thinking it would be useful stabling point for when the line
cocks up again if nothing else. But thats LU for you.

Pretty much - once they'd built the actual thing (and made the branch even
more useless than it needed to be, hence no extensions) I guess the cost and
hassle of closing it over the protests of thse who found it useful for
whatever reason was a factor in keeping it going until major infrastructure
works changed the balance.

And the old bricked up entrance to Aldywch is an unsightly mess - on a
major thoroughfare too. Why don't they cover it up or just repaint the

Epping - Ongar Railway Now Open
 
Has anyone seen the rusty tube loco. wreck outside Epping Station? It
looks like a long abandoned battery loco.



Not a battery loco.

It is L11, 1960s built out of two ex-"standard" stock motor coaches,
each cut in half, and the two motorised ends mated to make a BoBo out
of what were two Bo2 cars. Straight electric, not battery, its motors
pairs in series only, no parallel, for slow speed shunting. Was the
Acton works shunter until early 1990s or so.
