There's life (and quite a lot of trains, few of which are FCC) north of Cambridge, you know! Do you have to be such a troll, Roland? The vast majority of Cambridge passengers travel to and from London, mostly via the Kings cross route. The only 12-car trains, for example, are towards London. Almost no trains North of Cambridge are more than four cars, if that. Just pointing out that not everything on the railway revolves around FCC's handful of 12-car trains. The XC trains have been packed, north of Cambridge, every time I've been on them, and during the day there's a lot of passengers north of Cambridge once the couple of trainsful of commuters has headed for the smoke. Come off it, Roland! XC trains are never longer than three cars, sometimes only two. At least half of all FCC trains to London are eight cars or more. -- Colin Rosenstiel |

How many of these people are going to Nowhere-in-the-Fen and Littleheardof St.Forgotten, and how many are turning left at Ely and heading for the Midlands or (proper) North? Quite a few are heading for Ely, I was surprised how many people get aboard southbound trains mid-morning or tip out mid afternoon. Of the rest, the biggest flow is probably to Peterborough and beyond (on XC). -- Roland Perry |

You don't seem to be taking much account of how full each train is. In particular only the "Cruisers" have much in the way of southbound patronage from Cambridge during the day. And half of one of those has come from Kings Lynn and Ely. Western Europe's largest city in "more popular destination than Shepreth" shock. -- Arthur Figgis Surrey, UK |

Not any more. Evening peak restrictions only apply to GA Super-Off Peak tickets, now available on weekdays, and not to Off-Peak tickets via the West Anglia Route including Tottenham Hale. There's conflicting information online. Journey planners suggest the Off-Peak Day Return isn't valid in the evening peaks on either route, but looking at the BRFARES site they say it's a B1 which doesn't have any evening restrictions on either route (but I'm sure no-one thinks they are valid from Kings Cross). I haven't looked anything up, but it sounds like you're both talking at cross-purposes - you're talking about the *any permitted* Off-Peak Day Returns, Colin's talking about the (cheaper) *GA-only* Off-Peak Day Returns. Meanwhile they seem to agree over the Off-peak period return, with an evening blackout of 1628-1835 on both lines. |
