Default Back office Oystercard delayed until 2017

The back office version of Oyster will be delayed until 2017.

http://www.london.gov.uk/moderngov/d...ommitt.pdf?T=9

"Caroline Pidgeon MBE (Chair):
I have a couple of little things I wanted to pick up, Shashi. Can you confirm when we can expect the weekly cap to be on Oyster? Is it going to be your next generation of Oyster that it is on ? When can we expect that? Because I realise the programme has slipped, for good reasons, but back in 2013 the Mayor wrote to me on this issue and confirmed it would be in in 2015. Obviously we are behind. What date are you working to?

Shashi Verma (Director of Customer Experience, Transport for London): Please do not hold me to this,
because we do not have a detailed programme as yet.

Caroline Pidgeon MBE (Chair): No, we just need a rough idea.

Shashi Verma (Director of Customer Experience, Transport for London): Roughly speaking, it is another two years' worth of work before that can happen. "

Hmm, "ready in two year's time"

Fast forward two years:

it is another two years' worth of work before that can happen. "

Any bets on what the answer will be in another two year's time?

Probably ready, at least enough for a pilot.

This has never been something that TfL have shouted about publicly, so
try and contain your excitement when it comes to your beloved list of
transport ticketing vapourware!

hmm, is a pilot what the good lady was asking about, or customer
rollout?

Was the letter Boris wrote in 2013 confidential?

I'm also going to assume that any extension to the Oyster availability
requires the back-office to be in place. For example, completing the
rollout to [Theobalds Grove, Waltham Cross, Cheshunt, Brentwood,
Shenfield, Broxbourne] Rye House, St Margarets, Ware and Hertford East
announced as long ago as 2011. GTR have also announced "Oyster PAYG
extensions - as far as Epsom, Gatwick Airport, Luton Airport, Welwyn
Garden City and Hertford North" by September this year.

TfL announced Oyster weekly capping predicated upon the new back-office,
but with an open-ended delivery date, in November 2014.

so try and contain your excitement when it comes to your beloved list
of transport ticketing vapourware!

The subject does appear to be plagued with over-optimistic announcements
and delays running into years. I'm not so much worried about the time it
takes, as the extremely poor forecasts that are made.

An Oyster card that works the same way as a wireless payment card,
where the fare calculations are done in the back office at the end of
the day. Instead of a bank account, the Oyster card is linked to a TfL
account where you deposit money.

Thus making the card cheaper, as it ceases being a full smartcard and
can just be a simple RFID card, like the ones you use to open doors at
work which cost next to nothing.
