We're heading up to Haworth then Hawes. Is the A1
still a good bet or does it go too far east?

It's still a better bet, as the A1 is a lot less busy than is the M1. Better
watering holes, too.

You have two easy ways to cross to the M1. Either use the A57 through
Worksop or take the M62 west, which you will want to take anyway. The A57 is
mostly single carriageway, and is probably the worse option in your case.

Wouldn't the A14 be a better bet? Just take the M11 to the A14 and
stick on it until it hits the M1. That way it's virtually motorway
standard all the way and you don't get the nasty bit of the A1 between
Peterborough and Doncaster where you have to stop for roundabouts
every few minutes.

Oh, and if you're a tourist, which it sounds like you are, stop in
Cambridge if you have time. You'll be passing within sight of the city
centre (look right between junctions 12 and 13 of the M11 and I think
you can even see King's College Chapel -- you can certainly see the
University Library) and it's a lovely place. OK, I'm biased, I lived
there for four years...
