Default Dumb traffic lights

I know this because a few months ago, we had one of those

'election'
things, where people got to say who they supported, and more

people
supported him than anyone else. See:

http://www.londonelects.org.uk/results/mayor/index.html

It would be interesting if they added a couple of exta boxes to the
ballot paper

a) "don't care"

b) "none of the above"

Then we would really know what the people think - which is why my
proposal will never be adopted.

Be fair, there is noticeably less traffic on the roads during school
holidays.

The actual number of car journeys that consist only of the "school run"
are not that large compared with the other work-related journeys. However,
the belief is that the combination of this small extra number, combines
with the fact that people who both drop off their child and going to work
will be more spread out in the holidays (having more choice of arrival
time) - the result is to push the road over the threshold between "within
capacity" and "overloaded".

Also in the summer a fair proportion of people who would normally be driving
to and from work are in fact lying on a beach somewhere. The A1 and A421
were both noticibly quieter during the summer months and they aren't used
for many school runs.

It is not just pupils who arrive at school by car. Most of the country's
half a million school teachers go to and from school by car; then
there's all the ancillary workers - then add to that the fact that staff
in Higher Education are also likely to be on holiday and that students
with cars will not be driving in and out of college in the vac.

All in all, that's probably close on a million people not driving to and
from school/college at the normal times, even without the "school run"
journeys.

Sorry, I'm talking about this specific road with these specific schools
which, apart from anything else, have different holidays to the local
state schools.

The size of that school run is known from council surveys, and a
relatively small drop makes a *big* difference to traffic flow.
