Default Oyster capping - when does it kick in?

I've got a prepay Oyster, and used it on one of my infrequent trips to
London yesterday.

As I left KX, after my third trip on the tube, I checked the card and it
said I'd been charged for 3 lots of £1.70 (itself a bit of a shock - my
mental image is still around the £1.20 level). But that's £5.10
altogether. Shouldn't it have been capped at £4.70 [my first trip
started at 11.30am], or does it only get recalculated overnight?

It should be capped as you go along provided you always touch out properly.
I take it you are 100% sure that it didn't actually cap you? I've never
been capped so don't have experience of how the machines display your
journey history when you have been, but they aren't a model of clarity even
for uncapped journeys. I can well imagine it listing three £1.70 journeys
but actually showing that only £1.30 was debited for the last one.

All I remember is seeing the three £1.70 fares listed. I'd like to check
this online, but am struggling to find the relevant url. I can see how
much credit is left (you don't even have to log in for that), but I've
gone through their lengthy online account registration and still can't
find it :-(

I'm pretty sure it isn't there to find. I wish it was as it really needs to
be examined at leisure rather than at a ticket machine in a busy tube
station with a queue forming. It wouldn't be so bad if it could be printed
out but that never seems to be an available option.

The Oystercard helpline on 08453 309876 can check it for you.

If you have any "incomplete" journeys on your card (ones where it
thinks you've only touched a reader at one end) then those journeys
are charged at £1.70 but don't count towards the daily cap.

If your Oyster card is registered, then (regardless of the cause) you
can get the problem fixed by calling the Oyster helpline (number is on
the back of the card). However, since it's an 0845 number, the call
may cost you more than the 40p you stand to reclaim...

It is if you ask the nice man at the ticket window. Although they
always give me a full printout about 15" long when I just want the trip
history (last 8 trips, same as the ticket machine shows you) to go in my
travel expenses claim.

Oh well, as it'll be some before I'm back in London, and online checking
of my account doesn't seem to be implemented yet, and they won't take an
email instead of an 0845 call... I think it's stalemate. Isn't new
technology wonderful :-)

You can ask at the ticket office for a printout of your recent
journeys. I did this last week, for just rhe reason you mention. I
was given one with no problem, but I was told you can only get one
that covers the last 8 journeys.

Does anyone know how much of your journey history they actually keep?
Do they only retain the last 8 journeys, or can they trace everywhere
you've been since you got the card?

You can actually get the helpline to call you back when an operator
becomes free, rather than sitting in the queue. When you're waiting in
the queue, there will at some point be an option "press 1 for the next
available operator to call you back", at which point you enter your
phone number and then hang up.
