Default Putney Green

Evening all,

I don't know if anyone else here reads the (generally ****-poor) 'London
by London' e-newsletter thing; if they do, they may have noticed the
following query from a reader:

On the district line platform map at Mile End station they have invented
a new stop. On their map between Putney Bridge and East Putney they show
a 'Putney Green'. Is this LU being stupid, or is it just a really old
map still showing a now defunct station? I keep peering out of the
window on the way through, but can see no evidence of a disused station.
I think it's just them being stupid...

It's not there now, and Clive doesn't mention any such station having
closed, so i'm inclined to think it's a mistake. Anyone know different?

A bit of a google does turn up some references to a Putney Green, but it
usually seems to be a thinko for Parsons Green or East Putney.

Some of the central line maps have 'Shepherds Bush Green' on them. Perhaps
it is that misremembered.

As the reader mentioned the adjacent stations, this seems unlikely.
Anyone in a position to visit Mile End sometime soon, preferably with
a digital camera?

The sign I looked at is a large, free-standing one on the
west-bound platform. The order of the stations shown is:

Fulham Broadway
Parsons Green
Putney Green
Putney Bridge
East Putney

which puts the missing station on the north side of the river.

In which case, it would seem very peculiar to call it Putney anything.

Are you sure it couldn't have been Walham Green (the old name for Fulham
Broadway until 1952)?

Maybe the sign writer got distracted halfway through Putney Bridge,
restarted in the middle of Parsons Green without realising, then
continued with Putnet Bridge, etc.?

Isn't this one of those phantom stations that people put on maps, to detect
whether someone has copied it against copyright.

They do this on the London A-Z and on logarithm tables.

And in other maps - they're called 'trap streets'. A trap *station* seems
like going a bit far, though! It's not as if LU jealously guard the list
of their stations ...

and on logarithm tables.

Eeek. That seems like a bad idea, or at least would have been when such
things were actually in use for building things, navigating things, etc.

There are also fake entries in dictionaries and encyclopedias, known as
nihilartikels, which serve the same purpose. At least, according to
Wikipedia they do:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nihilartikel

They could, of course, be making it up.

The weirdest example of this sort of thing they mention is that the German
bundestag has a fake *member*, Jakob Maria Mierscheid, who appears on
official documents and everything.
