Why would they be? The last franchisee was named after the route,

The last franchisee was not named after the route. The franchisee
was GoVia Group. The trading name that they used for their services
was Thameslink, which happened to be the same as the franchise
name.

You're splitting hairs. Govia's operating company for the franchise,
Thameslink Rail Ltd, was named after the route, which was called
Thameslink by Network South East before privatisation.

The current franchisee is First Group. The trading name that
they use is First Capital Connect - but the name of the franchise,
as far as the DfT is concerned, is still Thameslink.

No, the name of the franchise is Thameslink/Great Northern. First
Capital Connect continue to use "Thameslink" to refer to that route
within their overall network.

Similarly, the Midland Main Line franchise is franchised to
National Express and operated using the trading name Midland
Mainline and the Inter City East Coast franchise is franchised to
Great North Eastern Railway, who operate it using their company
name.

Not surprising that people get confused, is it?

Since the general public aren't generally aware of DfT franchise names,
it's less confusing to them than you apparently find it.

Oops! Of course it is now. Touche.

Since I could name every franchise, its franchisee and operating name your
presumption that *I* am finding them confusing is incorrect. ;-)
