I have been informed that it is being, or has been, dismantled at Theobalds
Grove and will shortly be reinstated at or near its original location between the Strand and Fleet Street. -- John Rowland - Spamtrapped Transport Plans for the London Area, updated 2001 http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acro...69/tpftla.html A man's vehicle is a symbol of his manhood. That's why my vehicle's the Piccadilly Line - It's the size of a county and it comes every two and a half minutes |

I have been informed that it is being, or has been, dismantled at Theobalds
Grove and will shortly be reinstated at or near its original location between the Strand and Fleet Street. My understanding is that it will be re-erected in or near Paternoster Square, to the North West of the front entrance of St. Paul's Cathedral. It can't go back in Fleet Street (sadly, in my view) because the traffic wouldn't get through. It was also offered to Middle and Inner Temple, to erect at the South end of Middle Temple Lane, but we turned it down (I was a member of the Middle Temple Estates Committee at the time) because it would have cost us over £1 million to erect it there, and in any event it would have detracted from the attractive gothic Temple Gardens building which straddles Middle Temple Lane thereabouts. I'm not at all surprised Temple Bar is a bit fragile as its been sitting
totally neglected in those woods for ... oh, it had been there ages when I was a kid round there 50 years ago! Good to see that it's going back into central London; it was wasted in those woods. *Keith* |

In article , John Rowland
writes I have been informed that it is being, or has been, dismantled at Theobalds Grove and will shortly be reinstated at or near its original location between the Strand and Fleet Street. Er ,if they put it back *at* its original location that could have a - to say the least - "dramatic" effect on traffic between the Strand and Fleet Street. "Nearby" I can believe, "at" I suspect is unlikely. This project has been talked about for yeas, decades, even. What's your source, John? (Not that I'm doubting you, I hasten to add!) -- Ian Jelf, MITG, Birmingham, UK Registered "Blue Badge" Tourist Guide for London & the Heart of England http://www.bluebadge.demon.co.uk |
