From my observations, ticket machines are never left unattended. When a
station is unmanned the gates are left open.

I know that at least some (all?) stations must be closed if there is not a
staff member present. There is no requirement that the ticket office be
open.

I have used South Woodford a few times recently. On all occasions, the
barriers were permanently open. Does this mean that there were no LU staff
at the station?

If there were no staff present, what would be the problem? There are
hundreds, if not thousands, of railway stations all over the country that
operate with no staff.

There is an open gateline if the gateline is unstaffed. That doesn't
mean that the station is unstaffed though.

Not suprised West Ruislip Ticket Office is closing hardly ever see anyone at
the station.
