www.trainsfares.co.uk (linked to from South West Trains website) wants to
sell me ticktes to a 07:27 train from Clapham Junction to Salisbury on Monday 26 May. However, neither the TfL Journey Planner nor the personalized timetable (valid from 18/05/2008 to 13/12/2008) grenerated on the SWT website lists this train. Who is in error? The price for a cheap day return for two adults is £50.40. Is this the cheapest fare we can get? We do need to travel early. (You may recall I asked about visiting Stonehenge earlier. I've been meaning to thank you for your advice on that. Especially Mr Jelf's suggestion about Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum.) -- jhk |

There's a new timetable from 17th May and I think the 7.27 train is new. The offiical timetable at nationalrail.co.uk has it. The SWT timetable generator and the TfL website just haven't been updated. The price for a cheap day return for two adults is £50.40. Is this the cheapest fare we can get? We do need to travel early. Train ticketing is standardised so - with a few exceptions* - you'll get exactly the same price everywhere. The cost of a CDR from Clapham Junction to Salisbury is fixed at £25.20. I don't think there are any discounts that you can use. Note there's also no need to actually book - these are flexible tickets that for your purposes are valid on any train and they simply cannot sell out. You can buy one for exactly the same price moments before you get on the train. (* As it happens, one of the exceptions is available on this route. megatrain.co.uk do cheap inflexible advance purchase tickets, and might be worth a look in a week or two when your date becomes available) U -- http://londonconnections.blogspot.com/ A blog about transport projects in London |
