It would seem to have been invalid *for that trip*, but they don't mean
that I'm sure. They would be talking about complete invalidity. Perhaps

BZ6 to Sheffield? I didn't know such a thing existed - it was only
the NSE area.

You sure it wasn't a station in zone 6 to Sheffield ticket, which is
a very different thing in terms of validity?

It's the PACE required warning now I think and anyone who is employed
to investigate crime has to give it (below) whatever the offense if the
statement might be used in court. So not just police but also Customs,
Revenue and VAT, vehicle examiners, BT, Post Office, Gas, Electricity
investigators, RSPCA, NSPCC and probably Jockey Club and Greyhound
Racing Assn.

A few weeks earlier I had travelled from Bromley South to Henley, and used
my Freedom Pass up to London and then from Paddington to West Drayton, hence
paying only from there to Henley and back. Going to Sheffield, I had
expected to get "free" travel as far as Elstree, but presumably what I got
was a St.P/Sheffield return.

Many thanks for your and everybody's help. Other than the freedom
pass helpline which you have already mentioned, would you or anybody
else be able to suggest the best person or office to "kick up a hell
of a fuss", as you suggest, to? Letters are written; merely where to
send them.

To the OP: Did EMT at any time offer to show you a document that
explained (like the website you've been directed to) in simple terms
that the Freedom Pass wasn't valid? That might have defused the
situation, and avoided any further action other than you paying the
replacement fare. If not, you might want to mention that.
