I would allow a little more than that, like 2½ mins. 2
stops per 5 mins
is easy eough to calculate.

Whilst better to allow more than less the 2 minutes is based on many

years
experience.

I suppose it depends on which parts of which lines you frequent. I live
on the outer fringes of the Northern Line, where 2½ mins is the correct
allowance. My other regular journey is Preston Road to Uxbridge on the
Met (10 stops) for which the 'average' journey time is given as 26 min.

Inner London stations are far closer so need less time.

My method works for the system as a whole, obviously there are local
variations.

How long should I allow for the journey ??

Great, now I know which joker with all the luggage to scowl at!

It does seem typically British to run a service to the airport, but have
no real provision for luggage space.

Mind you I promise not to have all my belongings in a back pack !

As with so many extensions to an existing service the Piccadilly Line trains
are a compromise. Its primary functions is to carry people between central
London, the suburbs and intermediately. The airport traffic is an add on,
providing adequate space for large quantities of luggage would be to the
detriment of those who make most use of the service.

I always reckoned OLEF stood for Off Line Every Five Minutes :-)

Good days those, until someone tried to upload with a V23 modem at 75
baud !!

All the best

I think there is a place for trains with mainly standing areas, which
would be better for those carrying luggage, but that's a whole different
thread.

I also use 2 minutes per stop as a working approximation but it isn't
right for outer sections of some lines. E.g. If I take the Victoria Line
from central London to Tottenham Hale I allow 3 minutes per station North
of King's Cross.

A good rule of thumb on the underground is to allow 2 minutes per station
stop.

Plus allow an extra 5 minutes per Tube line used, plus 10 minutes for
getting in/out of the stations and miscellaneous delays.

They need to remove the arm-rests from the seats so American tourists can
sit down.

Like they've done on the Bakerloo and Central Lines ya mean? (I'm
ignoring the Met/East London and Circle/Hammersmith & City/Wimbleware
for now, as those didn't have armrests when built IIRC).

Cya,

Barry, wandering off to look at the Fido nodelist and see just how small
it is

What a modest assertion! May we be permitted sight of the evidence for it?
