The North London Line ran through to North Woolwich until December '06. The alignment between Canning Town and Stratford has been taken over by the DLR - iit'll have three new stations in addition to a new terminus station at Stratford International, next to the new highspeed / Eurostar station. This is due to open later this year. Info here (PDF); http://developments.dlr.co.uk/extensions/stratford/index.asp The logic of cutting back the NLL to Stratford and replacing it with a DLR extension is lost on me. It would have been better IMHO to have just converted the Silvertown stretch to Light Rail and extended the NLL under the Thames close to Angerstein Wharf for onward connection to the SLL. Also what has happened to all the exhibits that used to be at that rather nice railway museum based in Woolwich Station? No idea. Pity, because the museum would have added a nice touch to the Docklands development. |

At the end the NLL service to North Woolwich was half-hourly (unlike every 15 mins west of Stratford - i.e. one in two trains turned back at Stratford). The DLR extension to Woolwich Arsenal via City Airport serves Silvertown and North Woolwich far better than the NLL ever did (and the DLR Beckton branch serves Custom House). The old NLL alignment from Canning Town up to Stratford will get a far better service under the DLR too, along with three new stations at Star Lane, Abbey Road and Stratford High Street. The alignment from Canning Town eastwards to North Woolwich is reserved for Crossrail (the Abbey Wood via Canary Wharf branch). I can't help thinking that this was all discussed to death prior to the closure - it was effectively an agreed handover of the NLL tail end because the DLR proposals were better all round - particularly for the airport. But all that is ancient history - all the alternative project options for the area used to be on the TfL website, but no sign of them now. I don't think E27002's kite is going to fly... Paul S |

Paul S The DLR certainly serves the Airport better than Silvertown station did, and to be honest there's not much at North Woolwich other than the tunnel and the ferry, and if you want to get to the other side then you might as well stay on the DLR. |

North Woolwich has a sizeable and growing residential community - about fourteen months ago I spent a lot of time down there for a council by-election and saw the DLR in heavy use. Silvertown station isn't actually that far from London City Airport's terminal as the crow flies but the route between them is along a residential street (plus some walking about within the airport itself) and it was utterly unsuitable for anyone hauling luggage. Throw in the half-hourly service on a single track and no amount of rebranding and signposting the station as "Silvertown for London City Airport" was going to get air passengers using it much. |
