After Metronet failed and TfL bought out the Tube Lines contract I thought it all already *was* in house. *Can someone explain to me what today's news is all about? AIUI they have taken over maintenance of the Jubilee Line /trains/ from Alstom (I think at the end of the contract or at a break-point). Alstom still maintains the Northern Line trains. Yep - the Standard has the story he http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23929870-.do Except: ---quote--- The Jubilee line, beset with problems despite an upgrade costing hundreds of millions of pounds, will undergo major changes to ensure it runs properly in time for the Olympics. Train maintenance is being taken back "in-house", away from private sector giant Alstom. Transport for London invoked a contract clause to end a multi million-pound deal with the firm. [snip] TfL said the decision to end the Alstom agreement had "nothing to do" with signalling problems but was intended to give the authority "full control over fleet management and costs". A spokesman said it would "help LU to provide a full, reliable service at an important period in the line upgrade". [...] ---quote--- I saw the late local news bulletin on the Beeb which featured this story - the report did eventually mention it was about the trains once, but otherwise it was pretty vague, e.g. there was no mention of Alstom (what I saw might have been a shorter edit though). I can imagine there being many viewers who had some idea about the demise of the infracos who would have been a bit bemused by the report - they should have specifically flagged up that it concerned the trains from the beginning. (Indeed, UIVMM, the Alstom/ Jubilee line trains deal predates the PPP, just like the Alstom/ Northern line PFI contract.) |
