Friday 2nd of January - do they have engineering works or something as
services don't seem to be running (northbound) through to Kings Cross when I
check the timetable online. How much extra time will I have to add on to my
journey if I have to go to Victoria instead and take the tube? I know there
are timetables online, but they don't hold the tube times and add on way to
much time for the connection.

There is no service through Central London over the New Year period.

Trains stop at Blackfriars AFAIUI running from the south. That
conencts neatly with the underground.

You don't state exactly whence and whither you are travelling. It might even
work out quicker to go via Victoria.

The TfL Journey Planner at
http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/index.htm
includes all bus/tube/rail timetables, including many rail services from
stations outside London. You may not be able to access the timetable as
such, but the journeys it plans use the real timetables. Where are you
travelling from?

No, Thameslink are not running between London Bridge (from Brighton)
or Blackfriars (from Sutton) and Kentish Town. However, actual
travelling time East Croydon - Victoria - Kings Cross can be much the
same as East Croydon to Kings Cross via Thameslink so you may need no
extra allowance.

Tube from London Bridge to Kings Cross is not recommended currently.

"Whence" means "from which place". We can't advise on journey times unless
you tell us from where you are starting your journey.

I thought you'd realise from the south. Haywards Heath to be precise. Then
from Kings Cross to Newark. Usually I take the Thameslink as it's more
convenient, but I checked by ringing NRE who told me engineering works 'till
Monday morning.

According to the TfL Journey Planner, it's 47 minutes from Haywards Heath
to Victoria, then about 25 minutes by tube to Kings Cross including all
transfer and waiting times, assuming a brisk walking pace.

That's 72 minutes overall, compared with 68 minutes via Thameslink when
it's running.
