I am myself 65 and I am not stupid, poor and disabled so it is unlikely I will fall into that trap. However among the elderly you will find many crippled by arthritis, many with stiff knees and many who find moving difficult and often painful. That is why any attempt to ban them from being set down or picked up from outside the building they have business in should be considered extremely callous.

Perhaps they should learn to stay indoors and not dare to delay Mr
Toad and his fellow bus passengers? If they cannot carry a heavy item
of luggage between Euston and St Pancras in less than four minutes
they shouldn't be allowed out at all.

(Yes, I am joking)

This has gone off at a tangent somewhat... Much of the time I see this
issue, it's obviously able bodied business people causing the obstruction.

You will find many non-elderly people who find moving difficult and
often painful. Perhaps they should learn to stay indoors and not dare to
delay people who are older than them? If they cannot carry a heavy item
of luggage between Euston and St Pancras in less than four minutes
they shouldn't be allowed out at all?

Or perhaps we could try to make provision based on actual needs, rather
than just looking for opportunities to sneer at other people and tell
everyone how we "care" more than everyone else? Nah, it'll never catch on...

I know the type you mean ... they are so wrapped up in generating
great wealth that they no longer have any consideration for others.

Good idea. You go first. What provision do you suggest?

Find out what if any provision is required by people with particular
needs (I've heard from people involved in this kind of thing that
"asking them" has traditionally been somewhat under-utilised as a way of
doing this), and then make the similar provision for everyone with
similar needs - but not those without the particular needs but who just
have to meet some arbitrary and unrelated category (unless it makes
sense to provide the facility for everyone, of course, in which case
just do so).

This problem - and a great many others - would be solved if TfL were to
invest in a network of carefully calibrated trebuchets.
