But the proposed replacement is an enquiry office - with a huge queue -
(go to Euston concourse to see what I think is an example).

The LT enquiry office on the Euston concourse was closed and boarded
up last time I was there, about 2 weeks ago.

I'm going to London next week so should be able to do a site visit
there, and at St Pancras (where there's allegedly another such office
adjacent to the Western Ticket Hall).

If there were any alternative facilities I could not see them.

On the concourse? There's still the regular ticket office below, I
assume.

The ticket office is still there, down below, but presumably not
geared up to provide information.

The Travel Information Centre at Euston, which was only opened in 2009,
is now apparently closed. TfL currently list only five TICs: Liverpool
Street (tube station), Piccadilly Circus (tube station), Victoria
(National Rail station, opposite platform 8), King's Cross (National
Rail station, western ticket hall), Heathrow T123 (next to T123 Tube
station).
