Evening all,
If, having properly steeled yourself, you look he http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl...oc=addr& om=1 You'll see a horrific, spectral prison, through which the pattern of paths and fields on the ground where it lies is still visible. A ghostly prison, built to hold who knows what manner of eldritch inmates - and even more terrifying, it's in Staines! tom PS Actually this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronzef...28HM_Prison%29 Presumably built between two aerial photos of the area being taken or something. -- Also giving up smoking (cigarettes) today so apologies if it reads wierd or I trail off into maddness at any point!! -- Agent D, 20051129 |

I found an estate with no rooves on... it looks like one of those diagrams you see in estate agent windows. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&...&t=k&z=19&om=1 If you look at the same estate in Windows Live Local, the Birds Eye Views show the estate completed, but the plan view shows the stuff that was demolished to make room for it. |

If you look at the same estate in Windows Live Local, the Birds Eye Views show the estate completed, but the plan view shows the stuff that was demolished to make room for it. I've come across a couple of cases of that with roads - the A120 past Stansted, i think, which was on the map but not the photo. The A10 bypass from Standon to the outskirts of Ware is still missing from the photos (unless it's in a tunnel or something): http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=ware...&t=h&z=13&om=1 And am i right in think that's the skeleton of a dead wartime airfield just to the east of Stansted: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl...wloc=addr&om=1 ? There's another one: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl...=k& z=15&om=1 Now a go-kart track and some football pitches. And what are these mysterious road loops: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl...=h &z=15&om=1 ? Another abandoned airbase: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl...=k& z=15&om=1 It's amazing how easy they are to spot from the air (assuming they're not decoys). Which is kind of unfortunate, given the context in which they were built! tom -- Gin makes a man mean; let's booze up and riot! |

Anderson writes And am i right in think that's the skeleton of a dead wartime airfield just to the east of Stansted: Yep - Great Dunmow, in use from 1943 to 1946: http://www.abct.org.uk/page_1592.html And what are these mysterious road loops: The remains of the USAF base at Little Walden (really only used for the D-day landings and the period after). -- Paul Terry |
