Hi all,

According to the OS 1:25000 map, there is a stretch of undeveloped land by
Larken drive at TQ 142 942. It is perfectly straight and runs both sides of
Sparrows Herne (the A411). Is it connected with the abortive Northern Line
extension? Or maybe it was a planned route for the M25?

Can't help with the reason, however from your description it's definitely
not there in connexion with the Bushey Heath line. The BH extension would
have run more-or-less straight from Edgware station to the A41/Spur Road
roundabout (i.e. the roundabout to the east of Canons Corner), and then
parallel to but just east of the A41 as far as the A5 roundabout at Elstree,
where is would have curved west and run parallel with the A41 to the
A411/A41 roundabout, where Bushey Heath station would have been. Larken
Drive is a good 2km west of this; I've never seen any plan of the extension
that took it anywhere near here.

On the map it looks about 50 metres wide, but the built-on alignment north
of Edgware looks nearly as wide on the 1:25000, and there is no way that
that is anywhere near 50 metres wide.

It looks a lot narrower than the green swathe through South Oxhey at Burnley
Close, South Oxhey, which can also be seen in land boundaries at Wessex
Drive in Hatch End, and was presumably left (for a while) for a northbound
extension of George V Avenue, so maybe it's too narrow for a motorway.

Go to http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/ and type in
TQ142942 and see it for yourself.

Go to:

http://www.old-maps.co.uk/

for the first O/S maps series.

Enter Edgware as the place name and then scroll the map down - view at 2
magnification. This shows the original line from Edgware, just follow it
along by scrolling to the right and see if it matches with your blank
spot.

If you want to enter the co-ordinates, they are given on the map as:
Grid Ref: 519761,191861

In the Abercrombie Plan for the London region, issued about 1944,
London was to have had five ring roads. The A Ring became the Euston
Rd etc, the B ring, the infamous Motoway Box, the C Ring, the North
Circular. Now there is also the M25, and the North Orbital Road.
The M25 is sort of like the E ring, although between Potters Bar and
Waltham Cross it's more like the D ring.

I don't think any of the five rings were planned to motorway
standard. The E Ring was to have been a scenic rural parkway through
the Green Belt.

I'm not sure exactly where the D Ring was originally planned to go,
but know that a little bit east of Bushey it was planned to go along
the top edge of the Borehamwood built up area. The gap might have
been for the D ring.

The D Ring looked as if it would have gone across just about every
golf course in suburbia. I can't think why they never built it.

Ignore this - I've just re-read it and realise that I misunderstood and
thought you meant the old Mill Hill - Edgware line (TQ206915).

Looking at By Tube Beyond Edgware, the extension effectively joins the
North western Avenue (A41) at the junction with Stanmore Spur Road (A410)
and follows it right to the terminus at Bushey - Elstree Road roundabout -
the junction with the 411. The limit of the extension where it adjoins the
Elstree Road is halfway along the reservoir.(TQ206915)

According to http://www.btinternet.com/~roads/lon_mway/GLP.GIF , the D ring
was going to cross Sparrows Herne at exactly that location. Thanks!
