Up/down/northbound/westbound?

There's also the problem of deciding where in central London the
southbound line say would change from being 'up' (which is normally
but not always TO London) to 'down' - away from London.

Will this work?

ISTR (but can't find confirmation) that if you enter a station with
your PAYG Oyster and leave it again (within a short space of time) the
journey is cancelled - ie no charge. To cover the case of...

in advance. They are no cheaper and there's a hefty admin/refund fee if
